Introduction & Importance

Ginger is one of the oldest known spices and medicinal plants. In Sri Lanka, it is widely grown in home gardens and commercial plots.

Uses

  • Culinary: Flavoring in curries, bakery items, and beverages.
  • Medicinal: Known for anti-inflammatory and digestive properties.
  • Industrial: Ginger oil and oleoresin used in food and pharma industries.

Growing Areas

Matale, Kandy, Kurunegala, and Badulla districts.


Climate & Soil Requirements

  • Altitude: 300–1,200 m.
  • Rainfall: 1,500–2,500 mm.
  • Soil: Well-drained sandy loams rich in organic matter.


Varieties

Local and Indian selections with bold rhizomes are cultivated.

Crop Management

  • Propagated by rhizomes.
  • Requires mulching, regular weeding, and organic manuring.


Harvesting & Post-Harvest

  • Harvested 7–9 months after planting.
  • Rhizomes are cleaned, boiled, and dried for preservation.
