Introduction & Importance

Lemongrass is a perennial grass cultivated for its fragrant essential oil. It is widely used in aromatherapy, cosmetics, and culinary flavoring.

Uses

  • Culinary: Used in soups, teas, and curries.
  • Medicinal: Known for anti-inflammatory and calming effects.
  • Industrial: Oil used in soaps, perfumes, and candles.

Growing Areas

Common in dry and intermediate zones such as Hambantota, Monaragala, and Kurunegala.


Climate & Soil Requirements

  • Altitude: Up to 800 m.
  • Rainfall: 1,200–2,000 mm.
  • Soils: Light, well-drained sandy loams.


Varieties

DEA promotes C. citratus and C. flexuosus, both rich in citral oil.

Crop Management

  • Propagated by slips.
  • Harvested every 3–4 months.

  • Leaves distilled to extract lemongrass oil.
