Introduction & Importance
Turmeric, known as the “Golden Spice,” is widely used in Sri Lankan households for cooking and Ayurveda. Its bright yellow rhizome is a powerful dye, spice, and medicine.
Growing Areas
Matale, Kandy, Kurunegala, Gampaha, and Hambantota.
Climate & Soil Requirements
- Altitude: 300–900 m.
- Temperature: 20–30°C.
- Rainfall: 1,500–2,500 mm.
- Soils: Loamy, well-drained soils rich in humus.
Varieties
Local selections with high curcumin content are promoted by DEA.
Crop Management
- Propagated by rhizomes.
- Requires mulching and regular organic manure application.
Harvesting & Post-Harvest
- Rhizomes harvested 7–9 months after planting.
- Cleaned, boiled, and dried before grinding into powder.
